Just what I needed

This is a gem, both basic and comprehensive, with clear illustrations. Step by step, day by day, week by week. I have been struggling for some time with working into reasonable shape to try to protect my heart from further problems, but aerobic exercise alone has not been enough. This is a trainer in a book, and I can use it at my own pace because it's VERY useable. You can easily copy a page a week out and carry it with you. I took it out of the library first to check it out and was hooked.

Not as good as expected

I thought it would have more info and stretching guidelines than the Stretching book by Bob Anderson would have. It really doesn't, and it just seems more cumbersome to use. I will stick with Stretching as my go-to book.

As part of my story . . .

This book is a wonderful collection of stories from various people from all over the world that have been touched by Louise Hay's work. I just happen to be one of those people (see page 227). I am Michael. Louise Hay's work helped save my life. Seriously, she saved my life. I was very depressed. I had horrible self esteem and I simply thought I was just useless. But then, I began to read her book "You Can Heal Your Life" and listening to "101 Power Thoughts" and before you knew it. Life didn't seem so bleak.

Now Louise didn't do the work for me, I had to do that myself. But what she did was to help inspire me to believe in myself. She doesn't even know who I am, yet she has touched me in ways that she may never, ever know. My life changed because Louise Hay listened to that call many years ago by writing and publishing "You Can Heal Your Life."

I believe God saw where I would be and called upon Louise Hay to do her work many years ago. For such a time as this. She could have easily said "no, I can't do this." But she didn't and because of that, I am here today writing the first review of this book. It is awe inspiring to know how many lives Louise Hay has touched. I am just one among millions.

Please buy this book. Not only is it a good read, a portion of the proceeds will benefit Hay Foundation. You won't be disappointed. Like me, you may even be inspired to write your own book to help inspire people just like Louise Hay!

if her other new book weren't exactly the same...

this review would have been even higher. The testimonials are OK but tend to all sound the same after the first two chapters or do. (I'm also a little disappointed but not surprised by how many of these people work for Hay House.) The exercises are FANTASTIC but they are EXACTLY THE SAME as the ones in her affirmation book that came out at the same time. I LOVE Louise Hay, but she writes the same book over and over again. (After buying 17 of them, I should know.) If you want to give "Weezie" a try, buy You Can Heal Your Life. After all, that's the book all the testimonials praised...

Interesting...But Nothing New

I bought a copy of this book after I'd seen Louise Hay referenced in several places. Because she was spoken of so highly, I was looking forward to learning a bit about her approach. I also hoped to gain some fresh insight.

However, this book is primarily a bound copy of stories or letters about/from people who believe Louise Hay has touched their lives.

Each chapter of the book does include a short section of affirmations and suggestions on how to promote healing mindsets.

This book is not the answer for those seeking in-depth spiritual guidance or a new perspective. Once you've finished the first few stories, you pretty much have the gist of the book. The affirmations are valuable but nothing that hasn't been included in hundreds of other places.

Overall, I would suggest reviewing her other work (books, CD's, etc.) if you want any serious information about Ms. Hays' methods.

I've read about 1/4 of the book, skimmed the rest; and it's now collecting dust on my bookshelf.

About the Author

Richard Plant was born in Frankfurt and was a graduate of the University of Basel, where he earned his Ph.D. Since emigrating to the United States in 1938, he has contributed numerous articles to many publications, and teaches at the New School for Social Research in New York City.

The Pink Triangle Revisited

It has been many years since I had read this book for the first time and I found it very interesting and very sad as I did the first time I had read it. I had read this book in the late 1980's when it first came out, it had been a ground breaking book about a forgotten group of people that were persecuted in the concentration camps of Germany, and in some ways the general public in the conquered territories of the Third Reich. This group was of course, the wearer of the pink triangle, in other words, the homosexual population of Germany.

What had struck me this time while reading it was how little things have changed. The author had written back then how little is said about the plight of people who were branded homosexual, and it seems that this is still a subject rarely broached today in books written about World War II. While there is a handful of books written about this subject, it obviously comes no where close to the amount of material written about the atrocities committed against the Jews, gypsies, clericals, and Jehovah Witnesses. These atrocities at the hands of the SS and other police agencies were horrific and widespread in all captured Nazi territories. No one seemed to come to the defense of homosexuals, not even their families. This was a tragedy to read about.

While this is a complex social issue to this day, it seems that society has forgotten the people who suffered horribly, and the subject needs more indepth coverage then this rather brief book. This is a good start, but I am sure there are many stories that are yet to be told. The fact that the author could only find a few poeple that would speak on the record about what they experienced, (with changed names), speaks volumes about how homosexuallity was viewed in the post war period. You could still be "branded with the pink star" in society, and lose your job, lose your friends, and lose face if people found out you were a homosexual. There were people who had very little sympathy for gays then, and even today, its a touchy subject in 2013 for some.

The last chapter of this book was interesting, the author talks about his personal experience seeking out friends who were either Jews or homosexuals in Germany after the war. This book seemed like a personal writing assignment for him in every way. In some ways, its refreshing to see such emotions written into a book that's suppose to be a historical writtings, and on the other hand, some might find the author a little to emotional for a historian. Historians are taught to write without personal feelings, and to look at every thing from a detached point of view, while capturing and reporting truths, no matter where your research takes you. This historian admits that this is a very personal issue for him to do that, and I admire his tenacity to defend why he wrote this book in this manner.

Finally, very interesting and enlightening if you are not familiar with the plight of the homosexual in the war. I think you will find it worth reading.

proud to be gay

this book gave a sense of pride to know that those that came before me suffered the injustice of murder and slave labor in the camps. the memorial that was build for those that were murdered in the camps im proud to be a gay man today and I thank them that suffered so I can be free of persecution and live in the land of the free and home of the brave may they rest in peace and may god bless all who die in the camps and at the hands of the Nazis.

INCREDIBLE!!

An incredible book revealing a forgotten past of discrimination and bigotry unmatched by anything since towards a group of people who even today are easy targets of the same discrimination that kept them imprisoned by the WW2 era Nazis long after the liberation of other inmates and concentration camp survivors.

Hallelujah!!! A Photoshop book that indicates new or improved Photoshop features! Throughout the book you will find a red star within the Table of Contents or within a set of text telling the reader that this is something new or improved in the Photoshop program. It is astonishing how few books on this subject provide this.

Having begun this review on a happy note let me further the notion that it is an excellent text if you are the kind of person that likes to have all of the facts. There are books on Photoshop that instruct the reader to do this, and then do that, etc., to achieve a certain goal. Well, this book will also instruct you in a similar fashion but will also furnish you with much more detail to foster a good understanding of why you are doing this or that. In fact, in addition to the paper book, it will also give you the ability to download an eBook or PDF version of the complete text, and, at no additional charge. Thus learning need not be limited to the computer on which you have Photoshop installed. But first, let’s look at the hard facts about this book.

Visual Quick Start, Photoshop CC (let’s use PSCC from here on) is a 520 page paper back volume. It lists for $39.99, however, as of the writing of this review, it sold on Amazon for $31.33. A Kindle edition is available for $16. The Book Level is rated at Beginner/Intermediate, a rating with which I would agree with more emphasis on the more experienced Beginner. The authors, Elaine Weinmann and Peter Lourekas, in addition to being prolific authors, are also designers and have taught the subject at a number of prestigious schools of design. Addition-ally, the reader can download many of the photos used in the book, so that you can follow along with the lessons using the same photos.

As I alluded to in the beginning of this review, this is a book for people who learn by doing as well as by inhaling all of the pertinent information about a procedure, process or whatever is the subject matter being studied. It is a no-nonsense book that gets right into Photoshop CC in all of its phases. There were a considerable number of instances where I learned something new or at least new to me. After a few of these, I went back to Photoshop CS5 which also resides on my computer and invariably, that feature or process was on CS5 as well. The point here is the fact that all of the previous books that I had read on CS5 did not contain any information on these nuances of Photoshop even though they were part of the program. It is also evidence that the authors of this book on PSCC are not leaving anything out because it is from a previous version of the program. For beginners, that is a crucial point. As a beginner, you want to learn all you can about PSCC even though the information may be old to a veteran. You can see why the book is 520 pages long. It is because it is comprised of a considerable amount of information about its subject. Also, as stated previously, it is a no-nonsense book that eschews flowery language and gets right to the point. This fact may be a stumbling block to some beginners who have no experience with programs like Photoshop.

The book covers all phases of Photoshop CC including Adobe Bridge and Cam-era Raw. It then provides good basic sections on Workspace, Panels & Presets, Pixel Basics, Layer Essentials Selections & Masks, History and Using Color. This is followed by what many Photoshop users consider to be the reason for its existence, namely, Adjustments. This is a prologue to all of the creative phases of the program with a number of sections that I won’t list here. One of the last sections surprised me, but in retrospect, made me realize what a clever piece it was, all in one place. It was a section on Preferences. If you have ever used a computer, you realize that every program has a number of preferences which enable the user to direct the program’s responses in a manner in line with the user’s work-flow. Well, you can imagine the number of preferences Photoshop embodies. Well, here is section listing all of Photoshop’s preferences (including Adobe Bridge) in one place. That’s almost worth the price of the book.

I’ve spoken about this book’s ability to educate the new user but it also has considerable value as a reference tome. Its Table of Contents and its Index both provide a very useable look-up facility. It is fairly easy to find a wanted subject within the book in short order.

In summary, I found Visual Quickstart Guide, Photoshop CC to be a fact filled book. It may take a little longer to get through it but the reader will be much better prepared for all that Photoshop CC can offer. For the experienced Photoshop user, it offers much information as a reference manual in a very useable size.

A Photo Shop CC 2015 Reference Manual: Visual QuickStart Guide by Elaine Weinman and Peter Lourekas

The Photoshop CC: Visual QuickStart Guide 2015 by Weinmann and Lourekas is not for the beginner in Photo Shop. Although PACKED with all sorts of helpful text, screen shots, and photo illustrations; I had to STOP reading it after about 25 pages, and switch to the Faulkner Book. The Visual QuickStart Guide is so detailed that one is left "not finding a tree in a forest" (or some such slang-you know what I mean). It is a very detailed and Technical book which is a good supplement to the official "Classroom In A Book" product by Adobe. As for practicality it is somewhat deficient in its 1) use of infrequently worded vernacular(it's made for those people with fantastic English skills), 2) Lack of follow along Lessons such as the Faulkner book provides. It's advantage is that it is extremely detailed and could be used as a reference book for the Photo Shop "purist". Even though I stopped reading it for now, I will probably appreciate it better as I finish the Faulkner book and become more familiar with Photo Shop 2015 CC. A good reference book for the Photo Shop CC 2013 to CC 2014 veterans; quite harder for the beginner at the CS-5 or CS-6 Level.
