Good idea but not well executed

I am undecided about this book. Upon second look, I see some value but there is some 'buts':
It describes old masters paintings how they arrived with the shapes using geometrical shapes - such as column, egg, cylinder, block - using shade etc etc. Problem is: while the painting of chosen master takes the whole page (good thing)- explanations of where to look at on it are a tiny copies of the paining with capital letter on it to point out where to look. For example there is a letter B and note that that part of the body is egg shaped. All good but I do not see the egg shape ? would be nice if it was drawn on the tiny copy of the paining to be sure which way the egg is shaped and where exactly is it. Some letters cannot be found because they blend with the tiny drawing, they are small and fuzzy. The concept of the book is good, examining paintings of old masters and noting how they did it, but execution of this book is poor.
(My book was packed very sloppy and arrived with bend corner which I find very annoying. My drawing books are my little treasures. I was very surprised that Amazon would be so sloppy - it came from them)

Insightful and inspirational

[[VIDEOID:38659251]]Drawing Lessons From the Great Masters is an art book that teaches by looking at the art fundamentals used by great art masters themselves -- Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Rodin, Goya, Rembrandt, among others.

There are 100 master drawings analysed by Robert Beverly Hale on the fundamentals such as line, light and planes, mass, position and thrust, and anatomy. These are all figure drawings. Each illustration is printed full on one page with a certain section selected for analyzing on the next. The commentary is simple and concise, providing great insight to what these artists were thinking. Many of these pieces are really sketches but when you realised the thought put behind every stroke and what the artist was trying to show, you'll instantly be enlightened.

At the end of this book, even if you can't draw yet, you'll be able to identify the difference between a good and bad drawing. And when you draw, you'll remember the principles.

This is a really useful and inspirational reference book, great for beginner to advanced artists.

Robert Beverly Hale has also authored Anatomy Lessons From The Great Masters, which uses the same teaching style here but focusing on anatomy drawings.

Well-written and well-illustrated, a fun book to read and use. Great information for the would-be artist, but also a great education for anyone interested in learning more about how to appreciate good drawing. This book has added a lot to my capacity to look at and understand art and I am grateful to have encountered it.

Making a dense subject more complicated than it has to be

I'm just finishing up my 2nd semester of PLC class using this book as our textbook. So, I and my classmates have spent a good deal of time trying to learn PLCs with this book as our primary reference text. In that time we've found several mistakes in the book and I've noticed that the index often lists the 1st mention of a topic but not any further instances of when the topic comes up later in the book. This is really unfortunate because often it's the 2nd or 3rd instance of a topic coming up that really has the most comprehensive description of the topic. For quickly looking up programming instructions, this flaw in the index makes it very hard to use, even though there's often more data in the book than is at first evident.
While Morriss goes into detail about many common and some obscure programming instructions relating to popular PLCs by Allen Bradley, Siemens and Omron there's very little that would help a novice really appreciate just what all a PLC can do. For an introductory text, I feel that there are probably lots of better choices. Advanced users probably won't find too much here that they haven't already encountered elsewhere. Where this book does fit in, is as a kind of intermediary text for the person who is already familiar with PLCs but wants to know specific addressing of commands relating to a handful of very common PLCs.As such, it's probably a pretty decent book. It's clear that Morriss knows a lot about his subject, but he has a hard time conveying that knowledge to folks just beginning to learn about PLC capabilities. Where I really found the book lacking was in communicating when, and under what circumstances various commands would be desireable to use. If this book had a re-write with more clear examples, more relation to problem solving and a much more comprehensive index, it would be much easier to use and understand.

A wonderful masterpiece for Indian art lovers

This is a wonderful book by well-known art historian B N Goswamy. It really is the culmination of a lifetime of scholarly effort curating and studying Indian art. Indian art has always been classified in terms of the wealthy patrons who sponsored it. We've never been able to refer to our Michelangelo-s or Caravaggio-s because the artists often came from extremely humble backgrounds (in old India, from humble castes) and were probably forbidden from even signing their work. Dr. Goswamy tries to pierce the shroud of silence surrounding the artists themselves and in this book he looks at 101 paintings (only painted work on paper is featured) through the lens of the artists who made them. The focus is very Northern (Persian, Mughal, Rajasthani, Punjabi, some Gujarati and Bengali), basically nothing south of the Deccan (except for the single work from Mysore). That still does not take away from the aesthetic wonderland that this book offers. The works are loosely grouped under Visions (painting abstract concepts and mythologies), Observations (sights and scenes), Passions (poetic moods both serene and frenetic) and Contemplation (quiet and intense). There are well-written 2 -3 page essays deconstructing every painting. The paper is high quality and the print is really nice with vivid colors. I wish the book were coffee table sized (rather than 9.5 x 7.1 inches) so I could really look at some of the detail, but I do think I am nitpicking. This book will give me a lifetime of pleasure.
