From Library Journal
One of society's oldest dreams has been to create a living machine. To most of us, cyborgs are Terminator or Robocop types who combine artificial robotic strength and firepower with human intelligence/cunning. Yet Gray, a 1994-95 NASA Fellow in Aerospace History, has collected writings that explore real cyborgs (or cybernetic organisms) as any entities that mix the mechanical with the organic. Thus, humans with prostheses or implanted pacemakers qualify as cyborgs. This fascinating assemblage of essays, short stories, and research findings covers the role of this incredible modern technology through its varied uses in medicine, space research, and military applications. Articles are written by experts in the field of cybernetics, including Donna Haraway. This unique work combines scientific fact and science fiction. The bibliography and filmography are invaluable additions. For large public and academic libraries.?Joe Accardi, Northeastern Illinois Univ. Lib., Chicago

From the Back Cover
The Cyborg Handbook is an initial look at cyborg society and at the range of cyborg technologies, from the restorative and normalizing to the reconfiguring and enhancing. These technologies can restore some to health and they can prolong horrible deaths, but they can also remake humans into more effective killers. Cyborgs, good, bad, and indifferent, are with us.

Indispensable Anthology Offers Best Overview of Cyborg Origins, Unique Interviews + Seminal Texts
By SRenan
This classic anthology, first published in 1995, remains the definitive collection of material covering the history, culture and academic consideration of cyborgs. For me, the most impressive accomplishment of The Cyborg Handbook is the inspiration with which Chris Hables Gray shapes many divergent views of cyborgs into a coherent recognition of life entering a radical new stage of evolution.

I admit to being seduced from the first page by the extraordinary language and vision of Donna Haraway's Foreward -- "Cyborgs and Symbionts: Living Together in the New World Order". Of course if you are new to cyborg texts, her words may feel more like "a warning shot fired 'cross your bow". In a style that is wildly and poetically evocative, Haraway introduces the impossibly high stakes strategy of merging biologies with technologies in the service of survival. She suggests it may be the only strategy that can sustain our species (while also possibly altering us forever.) "This handbook", Haraway explains, "is a valuable guide to the cyborg worlds we willy-nilly inhabit, whether we want to or not."

The Cyborg Handbook offers us 43 separate pieces published between 1960 and 1995. Gray has staged them in a narrative arc that tracks emergence of "the cyborg impulse" resulting from a global convergence of biologies, histories and technologies. Mythological & metaphorical models for cyborgs appear long before technologies arrive to enable it. It is the space program and the demands of modern warfare, as well as increasingly intrusive medical practices, that finally make inevitable the technological augmentation of biology. Perhaps most exciting is the special view provided of "the cyborg genesis" via interviews with pioneer engineers as well as the papers and reports they wrote. From there, this book documents the growing proliferation of cyborg memes in space, in war, in medicine and in imagination production. It goes on to introduce the future with texts on cyborg anthropology and cyborg politics. And now... 20 years after it was first published, with augmented realities and augmented identities rapidly becoming the new normal, The Cyborg Handbook seems more relevant than ever. And while editor Gray has carefully avoided the sensationalism that stains other cyborg-themed book, we must now recognize a reality more shocking, more radical, and more future-altering than any story about the Star Trek humans facing The Borg. I mean (with apologies to Walt Kelly and Pogo) that we have seen The Borg and they is us.

The Cyborg Handbook, though compelling, is not exactly an easy read. Cyborgs were (and still are) a comparatively new subject. I had the sense of multiple new vocabularies being created in front of me as I read -- sort of like taking a train trip on a railroad while it is still being built. Plus there is the thud factor -- 560 pages, 54 of them the index. I found it necessary to allow myself extra time to work through the multiples voices and vocabularies of the diverse and divergent texts. I had an especially hard time navigating the post-modern, poly-syllabic worded socialist/marxist/feminist academic texts. I was thankful for Alan Hill's playful and edgy book design that added visual adventure to often-dry text.

And there are disappointments. Missing, for example, is Donna Haraway's iconic 1985 text "A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, and Socialist-Feminism in the Late Twentieth Century". You can still buy it on Amazon in several books by Haraway -- in The Haraway Reader as well as Haraway's Simians, Cyborgs, and Women: The Reinvention of Nature.

If you prefer a more reader-friendly introduction to cyborgs -- one you can read in hours instead of days -- I highly recommend Amber Case's An Illustrated Dictionary of Cyborg Anthropology -- just out and also available through Amazon. But even that book, in a list at the end, recommends you also read Chris Hablas Gray's The Cyborg Handbook. And for good reason. There is no other book like it.

Holding a coveted spot on my shelf
By A. Turner
I would not suggest this book for someone looking for a quick, easy answer to the world of cyborgs. There are papers here from dozens of authors, each talking about a wholly different aspect of the cyborg - some cover the idea that technology has already turned many of us into cyborgs, others that fetuses are cyborgs, some stick with the traditional notion of the cyborg as half-man half-machine, some examine the role of the cyborg in film. It takes all kinds. And, in sturdy academic practice, some of the authors even give gentle jabs to other papers in the book, noting flaws or the overlooking of some fine point. Most of the research draws from Donna Haraway's original research into cyborgs, but there are a few people that are trying to break away from her hegemonistic mold. For a very entertaining and much needed example of this, try to find the two or three digs at Donna Haraway's definition of cyborg.
This book is one of the most invaluable resources for anyone doing serious research into the idea of the cyborg. Though there is a great interview with Clynes, co-inventer of the term "cyborg," The Cyborg Handbook won't do for primary source material. The bibliography is wildly extensive, however, and the book functions as an excellent starting point for the researcher. For those who aren't afraid to work for it, but who have a more casual interest, this book can be both a starting and ending point.

Excellent and readable
By Amazon Customer
Berg and Steiner's well written book is my new most valuable resource. As a graduate student who wants to focus on child and adolescent therapy, but in a program that focuses more on adult family therapy, this book was very helpful to me. Steiner took Berg's solution focused therapy and used it with children in a creative way. They give case studies and discuss some more common issues you will see in therapy, such as ADHD, trauma, abuse, etc. They also discuss the therapy in general and how to apply it to children. If you are planning on ever working with children, this book is a must, even if you don't necessarily agree with everything they write.

Thanks for the real examples of helping children find solutions
By Adding Machine (Tom)
I read CHILDREN'S SOLUTION WORK over the summer with many times of reading for short periods. The read is pleasant, the examples are unforgettable. The suggestions are helpful. The authors have grasped what it means to get into a child's world enough for them to have influence that can help children expand the possibilities they have for facing and dealing with critical issues. I recommend it.

From the Back Cover

As the patents for biopharmaceuticals first marketed in the 1990s begin to expire, there is an opening for generic or non-proprietary versions of these agents to enter the market. The collective revenues of patent-expired biotech industry now total $10 billion annually, yet biosimilar generics have been slow to arise. It is a situation that has drawn much concern from generic and branded drug developers, patient groups, regulatory agencies and lawmakers. The 2012 release of FDA’s guidance on biosimilar drug development further stresses the need for a technical yet practical guide to biosimilar drug development.

Arising from this landscape, Biosimilars of Monoclonal Antibodies: A Practical Guide to Manufacturing and Preclinical and Clinical Development gives pharmaceutical and biotech scientists and researchers a clear resource to understand the scientific principles and challenges involved in biosimilar drug development.

The book discusses the scientific background including history, classification, and biological activities – including background knowledge unique to monoclonal antibody (mAb) drugs and essential profiling characteristics that regulations require. Contributing authors from the frontlines of biosimilar development address the processes and issues involved with manufacturing biosimilar mAbs, like cell line development, process development, large-scale cell culture of mammalian cells, and final product analysis.

From the Author
Greetings, Readers! I'm honored you're interested in my debut novel from Mountainview Books, The Calling of Ella McFarland--a labor of love. The heroine is named for my grandmother AND granddaughter--both named Ella Jane. The story line reflects much of my ancestors' lives of hardship, faith, and grit in Indian Territory prior to Oklahoma statehood. My great-grandparents were permit settlers in the Chickasaw Nation of Indian Territory in the 1890s. Their eldest child, my grandmother Ella Jane Pyle, grew to adulthood in the Pauls Valley area, which is where she met my grandfather, William T. Banks. Their marriage certificate was issued in Garvin County in 1904. They farmed in the same general area, welcoming 7 girls over the succeeding years and burying 4. Papa died of typhoid alongside their sixth daughter Eula in 1922. The novel's story line follows independent-spirited Ella Jane McFarland, a farmer's daughter in need of a steady income and connections, as she finds herself on the cusp of reaching her lifelong dream: a teaching position at prestigious Worthington School for Girls. As the statehood, woman's suffrage, and temperance debates are raging, God may have unexpected plans for Ella Jane. Besides, one strikingly handsome gentleman on the Worthington board has caught her eye. Will Ella learn to listen for God's voice amid the turmoil? I hope you'll read The Calling of Ella McFarland and let me know what you think about Ella's journey and her important--and sometimes stunning--choices.Linda

A BEAUTIFUL WALTZ THROUGH TURN OF THE CENTURY AMERICA
By Grandmother of Six
Ella McFarland is a woman ahead of her time--not exactly a feminist, but certainly a forward thinker. Her faith in God and in her calling to help the downtrodden are exemplary. The love story is romantic and appealing. Written in language befitting of the historical time period, the details are rich and well-researched. Quotes such as " 'Blessedness has nothing at all to do with anything I've done. It has everything to do with God's goodness...'" and " 'You've drunk from a bitter cup. But if you'll drink the Balm of Gilead, He'll seep into the lifeblood of your soul and sweeten the gall in ways a sugared cup can't' " reflect the deep theology and themes of forgiveness and restoration which meander through the story. Or consider this beautiful description: "...she threaded a length of black through the needle. Even the moss rose design required dark threads. For depth. For interest. So like life."

This award-winning debut novel by Linda Brooks Davis is exceptional and I highly recommend it to those who swoon over historical romance.

By Ailie Michelle Harriger
If you love historical fiction with a faith-filled twist, you will love this book. I could not put it down!! Mrs. Davis is such a talented new author who brings us along the thrilling journey of Ella McFarland while she perseveres through triumph and tragedy to find her true calling from God and fulfill her destiny. Can't wait to read her next adventure.

Set in a turbulent time with many uncertainties but anchored by faith and purpose.
By R. Mark Sharp
This is not my favorite genre. However, my wife loves it and happened to like this particular book a lot. I read it as well and enjoyed the story, the setting, and the writing skill of the author. I appreciated the character development in response to events within the book. I enjoy reading of noble characters who can have great influence on others. The writing is clear and flows well. The message is of grace, trust, dedication, and purpose.

After some reflection, I changed my rating from 4 to 5 stars. The only reason I rated it 4 stars is that this is not my favorite genre. (I prefer nonfiction). However, when compared to other books within this genre, it is easily 5 stars because of the quality of the story, writing, and message.
