About the Author
Eileen John is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Louisville, specializing in aesthetics and philosophy of literature. Her essays have appeared in the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, Philosophy and Literature, and The Henry James Review.

Dominic McIver Lopes is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia. He is the author of Understanding Pictures (1996) and co-editor of the Routledge Companion to Aesthetics (2000) and Imagination, Philosophy, and the Arts (2003). He is also co-editor, with Berys Gaut, of the Blackwell series New Directions in Aesthetics.

I suppose you can't please everyone, but this anthology provides a good overview of the field. The essays chosen for inclusion are thoughtful and varied. Just take a look through the table of contents and you'll understand its breadth. Its first chapter pays homage to some classical thinkers and their works. Its a respectful gesture that proves the enduring importance of works like The Republic, written in another context and before the style of modern academia came into its own. The next chapters deal with how we define and classify literature. More focused segments on the components of literature itself follow. The collection manages to maintain coherence and focus, so you feel the works were chosen intentionally. Best of all, the texts are condensed to be more focused and straightforward. It's a gift to be able to actually get through a piece in one sitting. The end result is that you can cover a variety of subjects and navigate adjacencies as you please. The goal of philosophy instruction, as I see it, should be to encourage exploration. This book allow that, meanwhile giving students a working knowledge of notable theorists and their works.

It's also a rather significant volume, with a great deal of different texts. I could see it being used as a catch-all reference for beginning and intermediate students of the field. It gives you the foundation you need to advance to more specialized books related to your interest or academic focus. Since it's clearly marketed as an anthology, I am not going to insult the editors by pointing out minutia I would have liked to seen included. Frankly, I am nowhere near the level of expertise necessary to do so. I would prefer a general overview to obscure and narrowly-targeted pieces that were frankly never intended for mass audiences, and woud lose their intricacy if given a fleeting treatment.

The font is readable and definitely aided by the two-column layout. Once again, the presentational approach foregrounds the content and gives it the attention it deserves. The book, because of its readability and core value, has deepened my interest in the field. I see reason for average people - especially those who value the arts in their daily lives - to pick this one up. It's thorough and comprehensive. It begs important questions about fiction, characterization, criticism, and more. Take a look, and think critically about what you read - in this volume, and everywhere else.

does not cover the whole field

The size of this book and the subtitle give the impression that this book covers the whole field. It doesn't. This hodgepodge of Ordinary Language and other approaches to the philosophy of literature is not the whole picture. See "A Book Worth Reading" for a different and systematic approach to this new branch of philosophy.

The articles in this anthology are almost all by philosophers who have only a passing knowledge of literature. The results are sophistic and at time sophomoric.

Missing also are some famous contributions to the field, such as Sartre's What is Literature? a book which raises some serious problems for literature. Also, the work of John M. Ellis.

If you can afford it, buy all four books. If not, you're better off with A Book Worth Reading.

About the Author
Paige Baltzan is a professor in the Department of Information Technology and Electronic Commerce in the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. Paige holds a B.S.B.A from Bowling Green State University and an M.B.A. from the University of Denver. Paige’s primary concentration focuses on object-oriented technologies and systems development methodologies. Paige has been teaching Systems Analysis and Design, Telecommunications and Networking, and Software Engineering at the University of Denver for the past three years. Paige has published supplemental materials for several McGraw-Hill publications including Using Information Technology. Paige lives in Lakewood, Colorado, with her husband, Tony and daughter, Hannah.

Amy Phillips is a professor in the Department of Information Technology and Electronic Commerce in the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. Amy has a B.S. degree in Environmental Biology and a M.Ed. degree in Educational Technology. She has been teaching for more than 18 years: 5 years in public secondary education and 13 years in higher education. Amy has also been an integral part of both the academic and administrative functions within the higher education systems in Colorado and New Hampshire. Amy’s main concentration revolves around database driven Web sites focusing on dynamic Web content. She has just finished writing her first book, Internet Explorer 6.0 with Stephen Haag and James Perry. This book is part of the well-received I-Series from McGraw Hill.

Stephen Haag is the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and Director of the MBA program in the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. Prior to being Associate Dean, Stephen served as Chair of the Department of Information Technology and Electronic Commerce in the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. Stephen holds a B.B.A. and M.B.A. from West Texas State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington. Stephen has been teaching in the classroom since 1982 and publishing books since 1984.

Stephen is the coauthor of numerous books including "Interactions: Teaching English as a Second Language" (with his mother and father), "Information Technology: Tomorrow's Advantage Today" (with Peter Keen), "Excelling in Finance," and more than 40 books within the "I-Series." He has also written numberous articles appearing in such journals as Communications of the ACM, Soio-Economic Planning Siences, the International Journal of Systems Science, Managerial and Decision Economics, Applied Economics, and the Australian Journal of Management.

Readers are in for a surprise, too, as Neitzel cleverly conceals the fact that this is indeed dress-up until suddenly mother appears--"This is my mother who said, 'Oh, dear!' " She promptly removes each of the purloined items and sends her slip-clad daughter scurrying off to put on her own, more appropriate, party dress. Adding to the festive mood are Winslow's crisp illustrations (her rainbow of fashionable colors appears both playful and chic) and a clear design featuring generous white space. Ages 3-up.

In Her Own Words...

"My earliest memories are of my mother reading aloud. A lot of characters from books were real to me, as our family ritual included bedtime stories for me and chapters from longer books for the older children.

"I wanted to read for myself, so I often lay on the kitchen floor while my mother worked and I 'read' to her from memory. Soon I realized I could tell the story more exactly if I looked carefully at the words on the page. Spelling aloud the words I couldn't figure out, I worked my way through enough stories to satisfy me until our nightly reading session.

"I was eager to start kindergarten, and the day finally came when I walked the mile from our small farm in the western part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula to a one-room school. I watched eagerly as the teacher gave each child a stack of books. When she gave me only one, I was disappointed, but I turned it sideways and read the parts that said 'To the Teacher.' Then I carefully followed the directions. When my teacher said she wanted to talk to my mother, I thought I was in trouble, but it turned out she thought I should work with the first graders. That made me happy because they each had more than one book.

"My love of reading continued. In sixth grade I went to the 'big' school in town. The school had a room with one whole wall filled with books. Immediately, I decided to read every book in that library. A story I wrote was chosen for our school newspaper. I enjoyed people telling me they liked 'My Life as a Pencil.'

"In high school I won some essay contests, so I thought of a career in journalism. But I became a teacher instead so I could continue reading wonderful books for children. I encouraged my students to write, and sometimes I shared my writing with them.

"While planning one assignment for my students, I played with the pattern of the nursery rhyme 'The House That Jack Built.' My students laughed in the right places, and friends encouraged me to send my rhyme to an editor. It took a lot of courage to do that, but I sent it to Greenwillow. The editor-in-chief, Susan Hirschman, liked my rhyme, and chose Nancy Winslow Parker to illustrate it. Nancy drew little pictures to replace some of the words. The result was The Jacket I Wear in the Snow, the first in our series of rhyme-and-rebus books.

"Usually I start with a topic and decide how the story should end. Then I write little snippets of rhyme and, like putting a puzzle together, figure out how each part connects to another. Before I finish, the story changes many times.

"Sometimes when I read my books to children, one of them says, 'Read it again.' I think that's the best reward a writer can have."

I actually bought this book as a inside joke thing for my 16 year old daughter. We used to read it ALL the time when she was little and sometimes we quote it when one of is going to a party. She got so excited when I gave it to her. I see it out in her room sometimes so I know she's reading it - shes an honor role student and taking all AP classes in her Junior year. I think this calms her...

a book for children of all ages

This story is about a young girl who is getting dressed in her moms cloths and how she has to change out of them to wear hers. Its a great book for young children who are learning to read and want a fun story that they can read over and over agian with there family. When i was helping my little cousin justice learn to read she would love to take this book and read it to everyone and show them that she could read. This book is the one if you are trying to get a child exited about reading.

Terrific in-depth book on sex-differences and cognitive abilities

Up-to date, readable, and useful for those interested in sex differences with scientific studies supporting the claims. Excellent source material for my own research with ample citations that could be accessed. I loved the book and give much credit to the author in how she explains and uses her biopsychosocial model of brain development to demonstrate that though some abilities that are demonstrated by different brain areas, though different in men and women, are not hard-wired. Alterations occur through learning and experiences. it is not nature or nurture, but a complex set of interactions. I actually read the book in two days.

Personally, the theories that say we are more alike than different don't appeal to me because I think it is the other way around, based on real life and books I have read on human brain development.

able people from a variety of disciplines. The author of each section of the book gives a broad and honest appraisal of the history and the impact of contemporary Christian music.

The book gives the reader the feeling of attending a seminar on the subject of Christian music where the presenters deal with various aspects - both positive and negative - of contemporary Christian music and the influence of this music on the church.

The Message in the Music will be a great help to music students and to those who teach in the field of Christian music. Pastors, worship leaders, theologians, and writers and producers of Christian music will find this book a valuable resource. The book would also be very effective for small group discussion.

Contemporary report, but lacking otherwise

I chose to purchase this book on account of the "VIEW NOW" feature on Amazon, which usually gives me a pretty fair chance to know what the book is about. The dazzling cover sure helped also. But, the majority of the content turned out to be empty stats on specific songs in Contemporary Christian Music. I was hoping for a message, as the first part of the title suggests, but it turned out to be much more geared towards the latter half of the title. For those desiring to dissect specific, popular, ACTUAL songs and lyrics in CCM, this is definitely the book for you. For instance, if a pastor isnt sure on playing specific songs like "Breathe" or "You Are My Life" in church, the book may prove of some value. But, if you are looking for a Biblical pro and con evaluating contemporary musical worship, its effects, origins and it's core value to Christians, I suggest you look elsewhere. Put it this way, the book focuses in on how a "donut" tastes, if it is sweet or sour, if it makes you cry or makes you happy, which is good to know, but fails to convince one whether or not that donut is healthy in the first place.

This well edited publication put into words what I had often felt: something was missing or awry in our contemporary church music. The best part is that each author offered constructive criticism and suggestions. This should be in the hands of worship leaders and pastors across the country in all types of churches. What a gift to the Christian community!
