I'm hooked.

I wish I hadn't found this series until Spring of 2014 - both books are page turners and waiting to see what happens is hard.

Characters you care about, great mix of macro and micro views of the situation, and exploration of the most basic human emotions are my favorite things about the story.

Get to writing, spring is too long!

After the lights went out the remainder of the US government is in shambles, a powerful Mexican drug cartel is looking for more territory, Operation Rubicon is being led by Barrone with 5200 servicemen, and Gordon and Samantha are valiantly attempting to get to Idaho. Oh, I forgot to mention Sebastian is healing and the Church of the Latter Day Saints is helping him.

After two nuclear strikes and a 7 week period in time, it is estimated that 13 million Americans have perished. Most of the East coast is gone and the remaining people are desperate for their necessities. These individuals are heading West.

To complicate the grim situation in the government, many former US allies are jumping ship. The de facto capital of the US is in Cheyenne Mountain, CO. When the government didn't intervene to offer assistance, panic and fear struck the hearts of the remaining Americans. To make matters worse, the majority of the emergency stashes of water and food stored by the government have been destroyed. Who did this? And, why?

There are two truly sadistic characters in this cast. Pablo (the son of Alfredo) wants to expand the power of his father's Mexican drug cartel. He wants to be the leader of a new Empire. Then, there is Rahab, a religious fanatic. Possibly he is best described as a psychopath. Rahab and his cleansing cross are way over the top..

Just in case you want a little more action, toss in a couple of revenge murders. One is politically motivated and the other one
is personal in nature. A double OUCH!

One quote that struck me when talking about Gordon: "His two tours in Iraq had shown him how great and how awful the government and military could be". This tells it like it is!

Multiple story lines and the constant action are guaranteed to hold your attention from the beginning. All of the story meshes together well and characters are well-developed.

Most highly recommended and waiting for the spring of 2014...

Well worth the wait!

I have been patiently waiting for this book - the release date just squeezing into "summer"! It was worth the wait! The writing is excellent.

One suggestion for other readers - I think the book will make more sense if you read the first book right before you read this sequel. The only area that I believe Mr. Hopf could have improved on is the backstory for his characters. The lack of backstory does nothing to detract from this book though, I couldn't put it down and a few of the surprise plot twists really hit me by surprise!

Read it... you'll enjoy it! Somehow I don't think Mr. Hopf is going to continue being an "indie" writer for too much longer!

About the Author

Dennis Alan Nawrocki is an adjunct professor of art history at the College for Creative Studies and Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

David Clements is a professional producer and director of radio, television, and photography. His work also appears in Talking Shops (Wayne State University Press, 2005).

Like Detroit... feels barren

I really wanted to like this book. Alas, it's a good idea poorly executed. Beginning with its misleading title (quite a bit of the artwork is found outside the confines of Detroit City Limits), Art in Detroit Public Places is a narrow paperback stuffed with photographs and descriptions of public works of art in the Metro area.
Each mosaic, statue, or sculpture is given a lone, poorly reproduced black and white picture apparently taken from the same angle by David Clements. How can a picture snapped from across the street capture the impact of something like The Heidelberg Project? A solitary monochromatic image eschews the splendor of the enormous collection of junk with its telephone poles decorated with doll heads and artist Tyree Guyton's ever-present motif of playful polka dots. I've seen inept tourists take better pictures.
Alongside these pictures, Dennis Alan Nawrocki pens sketchy descriptions of the works, their creators, and their current status. It's rather ironic that this is the second edition of the work as the writing is aggravatingly set in the present. One would hope that the language would be given a more indefinite time frame. Instead of saying "recently" or "currently," it'd be smarter to have dates cited.
Even the maps that precede each of the five sections of the book are problematic. These graphics are slightly better than if a dot-matrix printer had produced them. In addition, very little effort would need to be expended to list the location of the artwork in succeeding pages on these maps. While this might seem a trifling issue, it exemplifies how Art in Detroit Public Places is an overly ambitious, under-produced mess. (ISBN: 0814327028)

Re-examining and Rejoicing Our Femininity

In 2002, I remember speakiing to a group of women in the Philippines at a workshop on women's wisdom. When I told them that there is room in this world for everyone to shine because inside all women are fabulous--- I got a lot of unbelieving looks. A lot of women around the world, even in the United States, don't believe that they've got it in them. And that is one of the reasons why I highly recommend this book. Sark's book is about learning to be a wonder-full woman who is not afraid of life. Here "succulent" is defined with these words: ripe, juicy, whole, round, exuberant, wild, rich, wide, deep, firm, rare, female.
Most women, have been raised up to be quiet and demure---keep your legs closed and your thoughts to yourself....etc, etc. Little do we realize that some of these tenets of femininity have suppressed our full expression of who we are and have prevented us from pursuing our dreams. We need to discover for ourselves how we can live life to the fullest.
This book is fun, wild, inspirational, definitely different and it CAN give you ideas on how you, too, can start to find out more about your fullest self. The concepts that Sark gives in her books, starting with "Succulent Wild Woman" are that women need to live life to the utmost and that they need to love themselves so that they can love others, too.
Here are some more of Sark's ideas that can lead you, too, to be your fabulous self: ...Marry yourself first...promise to never leave you... ...discover your own goodness ...dress to please yourself ...you are enough, you have enough, you do enough ...make more mistakes! And more thoughts on healing, fat, money and power, community, love and romance...
What's more, there's little whining in this book---one of her best ideas is: end blaming... She's got honest, good stuff about facing our insecurities, faults and fears.

I love SARK. This is another addition to the wonderful collection of whimsical, colorful, and insightful books she has written.

Very easy (and fun) to read, if i'm ever feeling down, I just read a few pages of SARK and I always feel a little better.

This book is a good introduction to the world of SARK and great gift if you know any woman that needs a self esteem boost. It's witty and deep without being tedious to read or annoyingly sweet. Sometimes we all need to be reminded that we are wonderful and creative beings and need that little inspiration to connect with our spirit to create and do things that make us feel alive.

SARK shows us that attitude and small actions can make positive and unexpected things happen in our lives. she gives many examples of this from her own life. Love it! every woman should own a copy.

Motion Broken Down

As an artist and beginning animator, I have found Muybridge's motion studies to be helpful in understanding how the body travels in time (animals and machines too) using time-lapse photography. This book remains current and comprehensive especially in light of the current digital revolution's emphasis on special effects and eye candy. Muybridge's work is important because it goes to the roots of motion and reveals its simplicity and beauty. I highly recommend this fascinating book for those with curious minds.

fantastic book, but no animals...

if you are interested in clear depictions of humans in motion,
it is interesting that the absolute best work on the subject comes from the late 1800s. If you are interested in animal locomotion, get another book. I am assuming that the other 2 volumes will someday become available, making this a true "complete" study.
perhaps someone will update Muybridges work in the interim.

WTH?? 10 PAGES LONG?!

This book was okay I guess I didn't get the opportunity to get into it because it's so short!! It's maybe thirty minutes long!! I'm so glad it was free. Hopefully the second installment is longer and much better.

Okay, number one problem here is it's listed as a book. Book 1? 33 Pages? Hmmmm... should probably change that on your covers, it's misleading. For me, it's not a big deal because it was free. The rest of them aren't, they're $2.99, which to me is a lot for something that takes 20 minutes to read and isn't the most satisfying...

The sex was so/so but the rest wasn't engaging enough not to skim.
