A great training guide for anyone

Like many triathletes I had a bit of swimming in my background when I started racing, but certainly not enough to be competitive. I occasionally swam with organized groups but my consultant travel schedule made sure that was infrequent. I got a copy of The Fit Swimmer, read it cover to cover and made up about a dozen workouts from the suggested routines. The section on open water racing was particularly valuable. While training diligence was definitely part of it, this book was the #1 resource for me in competitively placing in events ranging from local races to National and Ironman distances. Ms. Brems meets 2 imperatives: she explains things simply and she gives you the tools you need to progress from a relative novice to a competitive swimmer. Like a craftsman and apprentice, she leaves it up to the reader to figure out how to best use the extensive toolset in the book. I found that creating about a dozen workouts on 3x5 cards from her suggested routines and rotating them did the trick (store them in a ziploc bag for use poolside). You can experiment with different routines to test how your body responds. I now coach people on an occasional basis, and strongly encourage each of them to read the book before we start.

40 + swimmer

This is a very useful book for setting up a swimming program on your own. It has lots of workouts for all levels of swimmers. I am training myself for an upcoming open water ocean swim (the book has two chapters just on open water training)I photocopied several pages with great work outs and put them in a plastic bag so I can have them pool side while working out. It is the next best thing to a coach. Don't bother with any other swimming books. Many other books are written for people who have been coached in swimming and know all the "jargon", this one explains what is necessary and keeps it simple.

The Fit Swimmer in my initial review appears to be an excellent guide to someone willling and able to follow the advice, training programs and tips given in the book. For someone like myself, a super senior (past 75), I appreciate the advice and tips but I am not training for competition but just fitness purposes. I may adapt one of the training programs offered but for now I'll continue my swimming a mile ( freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke mixture) three times a week until I finish the book.

Redundant, ethnocentric, and no consistency in style

This book has good intentions, but there seems to be no consistency in the style. With some groups, the author talks about "Health Risks"; with other groups, the author talks about "Health Problems and Concerns." There's no explanation for why some ethnic groups get a special mention while other ethnic groups are completely ignored.

The tone of the book is very ethnocentric in that it assumes the reader is of the same cultural background of the author. The wording is very vague as well. For example, they mention "Customs for dating and marrage are much the same for Bosnians as they are for Europeans or Americans. . ." Exactly what does this mean? I'm not exactly sure what is customary since Europe and America are large places, and there seems to be a lot of diversity in marriage and dating customs.

There are also a lack of cited references in the statements made. I wouldn't be surprised if the author interviewed one Iranian/Pole/Filipino/etc and based whole assumptions of a culture based on 1-2 informal interviews. The author also cites several research studies of questionable methodology (or maybe just summarizes them in unclear language) and does a poor job citing the resource so we can see for ourselves exactly what was involved in each study.

Overall, I did not enjoy the book, nor did I think it was very helpful. The intentions are good, but there is a lot that can be improved for future editions.

I was recomended this book by an instructor and it is really interesting to see how different cultures deal with different situations. What you or I may seem routine may be crazy to them and vice versa. Def. recomend if you are a provider in a multi-culture area

Since I got the book, I browse through to see what it is all about. What a revelation and the ideas it presented are very precise and very informative. It is a good reference book for any health care workers who would like to know and improve their understanding of their patients. It can also be applied in any situation not just the health care field. I recommend this book for people who will be working with multi-cultural or multi-ethnic groups.

About the Author
The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

The Calculus textbooks almost all the same

Okay here is my point of view. I am not a student anymore, but my daughter is an Electrical Engineering student.

I am a severly disabled vet with a spinal cord injury, so I have alot of weird nerve and brain issues.

So math is sort of a recreation and therapy, I used to be a software engineer but my brain really does work right anymore.

I get my daughter's textbooks when they are done, plus I have a ton of other textbooks I acquire.

Looking at Stewart or Larson, they are almost the same. Larson has a bit more flash and is slighty better for me the self study. But honestly there is very little difference in the texts.
I have a few Calc textbooks which are not the popular choices for universities, and they are better, but not popular.

One issue is that online courses have forced textbook publishers to come up with online content, so all the textbooks now are geared for cashing in on internet content. So in this case the internet is not improving the educational experience for students.

As a self study, Stewart is worthless. As one reviewer stated, everything is really standardized to fit some testing model. So they present the basics. There are a few sample exercises, but none that really instruct the student on how to approach or solve the harder cases. I assume you are suppossed to figure that out yourself. Textbook to Textbook they take that approach.

As a reference I guess it is okay. But if you really want to understand and learn it, pick up Morris Kline and Adrian Banner. Start there then move onto pure mathematics. It is not an easy way to go, but you will have a better understanding.. Use Stewart as a reference and for some practice exercises.

Good book w/ some drawbacks

Stewart's calculus textbook is a relatively standard development of basic calculus. It is readable with many examples and pictures to aid understanding. It is not a "rigorous" development in the strict (i.e. real analysis) sense - you'll need a supplementary textbook if you want to crack that egg. It does, however, provide students with the ability to solve problems using calculus that they will likely encounter in later courses.

It is not without drawbacks, however. My primary complaint is that while I worked through the later chapters for the first time I was unsure why I was doing what I was. In particular, the chapters on vectors were rather poorly done - they seemed developed enough just to get students through the problem sets. On the other hand, anybody wishing to seriously learn vector calculus will likely have an entire book devoted to the topic.

My only other complaint is the development of differential equations. I understand the purpose of including them in the textbook (they're used in many fields), but you really can't cover much about differential equations in the small chapters devoted to them. Like I said, I understand why the author included the sections, but after learning differential equations properly, I do not feel like those chapters in this textbook served any useful purpose.

Due to the widespread usage of this textbook, it is inevitable that some struggling students (and mathematicians!) will dislike it. If you happen to be a struggling student, check out "Calculus: An Intuitive and Physical Approach" by Morris Kline. It is very cheap, thorough, and will undoubtedly make for an excellent study aid.

Get it if you have to, but if you have a choice: Spivak

If your course requires you to get this book, get it of course. But if you want to learn Calculus from the best Math textbook ever written, get Spivak (Calculus, 4th edition). Also, if you stumble across a copy of Apostol, that's pretty good too (Calculus, Vol. 1: One-Variable Calculus, with an Introduction to Linear Algebra). But Spivak is the best - relevant, well written, engaging, comprehensive.

One of the very best books I've read in a L-O-N-G time

Let me preface this by saying I read a lot. Like every day for hours a day. I have read thousands of books and rarely is there one that is so original in its concept, its style and its writing. This book is one such book.

There are multiple threads throughout the story, and they all tie back to the two main characters: Martha, a slightly impaired or otherwise "not quite there" older woman and Arthur, a handsome, 40-something Episcopalian priest new to the town because of a scandal in his previous post. The supporting characters all have something to do with the church where Arthur is assigned and the reader gets to know different facets of the lead characters by their interactions with the townspeople.

The writing is top-notch. I loved how the point of view would change as the reader was allowed to see other characters. I loved how very "real" these people felt. I am not a gay 40-something man or a slightly deranged 60+ overweight woman, but I could absolutely relate to these people because the writing was so good. There were numerous instances throughout the book where I paused to say, "My God, that's so true!" One little example: the author writes about a teenage boy leaping up the front steps and slamming his palm across the lintel of the doorway. I have two teenage sons and my doorways have lots of smudgy fingerprints.

Sometimes just the choice of a single word is so perfectly placed in this story that I would stop and re-read the sentence to savor the writing. That skill is rare and one of the many factors that made this book stand above so many others. It's laugh-out-loud funny at several points, too. Lastly, the author does not hit you over the head to explain things; sometimes, an act in the past is referenced so subtly that I had to re-read that part and would realize what had happened.

Read this book. It's great, it feels very real and the characters are fully developed. You won't like them all, but that isn't the point. You will love Arthur. This book left me wanting to know more about what will happen to these people. I hope there will be more.

First-time author flexes surprising amount of talent to produce a unique work.

I will probably be the only reviewer to note that there is a serious thematic relationship to Stephen King here. I think the reason it won't look that way to others is that Stephen King doesn't do X-rated sex, and is certainly not known for gay sex scenes or sex from a woman's perspective. What King does do is look unflinchingly at reality that most of us would turn away from. I think the reason most people won't see that Lassiter is capable of the same quease-inducing voyeurism is because she turns her eye on things King wouldn't (or might get in trouble for).

Which sounds like I'm talking about sex, but in fact I'm talking about Martha. The surprising thing for me about this book is that a first-time author has created a character I find not just memorable, but unlike any other I can recall. Oh, you can find older, obese, not so stable women characters, but I think you have to look a long time to find any like Martha. She does not see herself as you see her, and your opinion is simply irrelevant to her view of the world. The King gaze pops out in the first pages where you get to see the obese Martha struggling to get dressed to face the world. As with King, you want to look away, but you cannot help peeking through your fingers to see what's going to happen next. I cannot say Martha is the star, because this is a very multi-threaded plotline. I will say that whenever Martha takes the stage, she dominates it. This book is labelled "Vol 1", and though I know nothing about future volumes, I find them hard to envision unless Martha finds some Moriarty-like way to return from her apparently definitive exit here.

Other King-isms include the intersection with the supernatural, the conflict between traditional religion and modern life, and mortal danger and murder. I can't say that whether you do or don't like Stephen King predicts how you'll feel about this book -- they're just too different in many other ways. I can say that if you share thematic elements with King in your first published novel and do not suffer by comparison, then you are a first-time author to watch.

The nuts-and-bolts writing is just impeccable. I read best-sellers that have far more awkward turns of phrase and even simple typos than I can find in this book. Other things I expect a first-time author to do poorly at: regional accents, religion, humor, sex, and snakes. Lassiter seems to have set out to take on all challenges at once. When she talks about handling snakes, or being gay in the church, you are presented with rich, convincing specifics, not caricatures. How-to books for would-be authors often emphasize how fast you must churn them out to make a profit. Filthy lucre must not be Lassiter's goal, for there is no way this finely researched book could have been written quickly.

With its explicit sex and variegated plot and high-quality prose, this is a hard novel to pigeonhole. I don't know what to say to help you figure out if you will enjoy the story or not. However, I think it is not subjective to say that this is a real talent at work here, and you could do worse than to take a chance on this first novel. Whatever else you take away from this book, I guarantee you will never forget Martha.

This book is a hoot. Pour yourself a bourbon and settle in for a delicious read. There are three main interlocking stories - the sixty-six-year-old Martha Browne looking for love (in all the wrong places); Father Arthur, looking for peace and a new start; and Darlene, a voluptuous interior decorator looking to find herself (though she doesn't know she needs finding).

I don't want to give away any plot points because each one is a pleasure to discover, but this novel manages to show human beings at their very desperate, and does it with heart, humor, and affection. I enjoyed immersing myself in the world of Amity, Kentucky because it's filled with people who are, at their base, good, who want to do their best, and who often fail in the most spectacular ways.

Recommend.

Dr. Wehmeyer is engaged in teacher personnel preparation in the area of severe, multiple disabilities and directs multiple federally funded projects conducting research and model development in the education of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He is the author of more than 180 articles or book chapters and has authored, co-authored or co-edited 19 books on disability and education-related issues, including issues pertaining to self-determination, transition, universal design for learning and access to the general curriculum for students with significant disabilities, and technology use by people with cognitive disabilities. He is a Fellow of the American Association on Mental Retardation, a past president of the Council for Exceptional Children s Division on Career Development and Transition, and is Editor-in-Chief for the journal "Remedial and Special Education". In 1999 Dr. Wehmeyer was the inaugural recipient of the Distinguished Early Career Research Award from the Council for Exceptional Children s Division for Research. In May, 2003 he was awarded the American Association on Mental Retardation s National Education award. Dr. Wehmeyer holds undergraduate and Masters degrees in special education from the University of Tulsa and a Masters degree in experimental psychology from the University of Sussex in Brighton, England, where he was a Rotary International Teacher of the Handicapped Fellow. He earned his Ph.D. in Human Development and Communication Sciences from the University of Texas at Dallas.

Karrie A. Shogren, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Special Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. She received her doctorate in special education from the University of Kansas. Dr. Shogren has conducted extensive research in the areas of self-determination and systems of supports for people with intellectual disabilities. She has a specific interest in the multiple, nested factors that impact student outcomes and the use of diverse methodologies to understand and explore these factors. She has published over 45 peer reviewed articles, is the author or co-author of 5 books, and is one of the co-authors of Intellectual Disability: Definition, Classification, and Systems of Support, the 11th Edition of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities' seminal definition of intellectual disability (formerly mental retardation). Dr. Shogren has received funding from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) to support her research.

Not a good choice if you need text-to-speech.

Hypocritical - Special Ed Book and accessible features are disabled from the publisher?! I use Kindle for as many text and books as possible. I need to use the text-to-speech feature to learn and study best. It is not activated for this book, nor is Xray. The material is quality and up to date, but the loose leaf format is annoying in the digital version. Additionally, not having active links for the supplemental activities is misleading. For the price, this should be an example of accommodated/ Universal Design options for reading a studying with all of the appropriate exercises included for a variety of learning/studying styles. This is a poor demonstration of how to accommodate student.

Unhappy with book

I don't normally give reviews however, after buying the book for such a high price I feel that I need to share. I spent about $102. For the book only for it to be a loose leaf print. Sender could of thrown in a binder for the price. I needed the book for class and it arrived late. Had to play catch up on the reading before posting. To top it off the print is in grey. I already wear glasses so grey made it even harder for me to see and read. Had to purchase the kindle verse. Not very wise giving the book is about exceptional lives.

Although this book does provide much helpful information, I was particularly struck by the inadequacy of the gifted student chapter. It perpetuates the misunderstanding that gifted students' exceptional needs lie primarily within the scope of academic issues. Most educators and administrators do not understand the social and emotional needs of gifted students. To better serve gifted students teachers and administrators should be familiar with theories such as Dabrowski's Theory of Positive Disintegration, as it is applied to the study of gifted students. The concept of "overexcitabilities" is relevant and constructive, and when educators are ignorant of how giftedness may manifest itself in students, behaviorally, emotionally, and socially, they may actually cause harm to such children.
