Robust, hearty and full bodied describe not just a Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon but also this comprehensive wine guide for the novice oenophile. Oldman, who has taught wine courses for more than 10 years (and, incidentally, cofounded the career Web site Vault.com), boils the basics of wine down to 108 simple chapters (here called "shortcuts"). He proves "the dirty little secret of wine appreciation is that there's just not that much to it." While Oldman says this isn't a reference book, it may be best used that way. Without the benefit of a flight of tasting wines, the information is overwhelming. Yet to look up wines by type or region, or to learn how to order in a restaurant, Oldman's guide overflows with succinct, useful advice. Those determined to read it straight through will find Oldman's anecdotal style makes the subject lighthearted and fun, and Oldman is amusingly opinionated: "Drinking Pinot Grigio is often like experiencing an Ikea rug, Ben Stein's voice, or a dose of Paxil: neutral, monotone, and devoid of highs." The casual voice occasionally is forced (drinking old wine "won't earn you a prayer session at the porcelain altar") but it makes the information accessible. Each shortcut comes with even more shortcuts: a "cheat sheet" summary, wine picks by price range, a pronunciation table and suggestions for food pairings.

About the Author
One of the country’s leading wine educators, Mark Oldman is author of the best-selling Oldman's Guide to Outsmarting Wine (Penguin Books), which was called "perfect" by Wine Enthusiast, "winespeak without the geek" by Bon App�tit, and "shortcuts to a connoisseurs confidence" by BusinessWeek. Winner of the Duboeuf “Best Wine Book of the Year” Award. Oldman’s Guide was also recently published in Japan and in four volumes in France.

Mark writes about wine for several leading lifestyle publications, and contributes a wine column and chooses the wine picks for the hit magazine Everyday with Rachael Ray. He is also the lead judge in the new PBS television series The Winemakers.

For over seventeen years, Mark has taught his lively Outsmarting Wine™ courses and seminars to thousands of wine enthusiasts across the country. He lectures at some of the country’s top gastronomic festivals, including the Aspen Food & Wine Classic and the Boston Wine Expo.

Mark began his wine journey in 1990 when as a student he founded Stanford Wine Circle, a popular university club hosting tastings with California wine legends, earning him the nickname "Bacchus on the Campus" in Wine Spectator magazine.

Mark’s pro-consumer approach and commitment to education have animated all of his professional endeavors. He is one of the three founding partners of Vault.com, the leading media company for career information. He is also a licensed attorney and co-author of several best-selling career-focused books.

Mark graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A and M.A. from Stanford University and a J.D. from Stanford Law School. He is a Trustee Emeritus of Stanford University, having served on its Board of Trustees for five years.

The finest wine book out there

Since I buy Oldman's Guide here so often as a gift, I'll add my voice to the chorus. I agree with the last reviewer that OG stands at the head of the line for wine books. I consider myself somewhere between a wine connoisseur and still-learning novice and I'll go so far to say that OG is the best wine book that I own. It is a book that I'm still learning from, while most of my other wine guides molder on the shelf after a few sittings. -And here in my home office I have two and a half bookshelves of wine books- The author Mark Oldman offers just the right amount of commentary on major wine topics-grape types, storing wine, dining out, et cetera. The descriptions and explanations are really clever and very dead-on and just the right tone for someone to learn about wine (or learn more about wine after they've mastered the basics). Oldman's Guide cost me only about $14 (with shipping) here at Amazon and I have referred to the book so much that it is already looks like I've had it for a decade. It is furthest thing I've seen from the standard monotonous wine encylopedia. This is the book to get.

I also endorse Karen MacNeil's Wine Bible as a solid all-around reference book - it covers everything in a lot of accurate detail. And if you want a graphical overview, you can't go wrong with World Atlas of Wine by Hugh Johnson, which is a large display-style book and very high quality.

Best all-around wine book, hands-down

With this incredible book, it's hard to even know where to start.

Ever since I accidentally opened a friend's bottle of '86 Heitz Napa cabernet and fell in love, I've been studying wine whenever I get a chance. I've purchased books like "The Wall Street Journal's Guide to Understanding Wine," "Wine for Dummies," and some more advanced "grape-specific" books. After reading through a few pages of this book, I was blown away and proceeded to spend two hours engrossed in one of the most entertaining books I've ever read - even among non-wine books! I laughed throughout, poked on by Oldman's extremely clever wit and knowledge.

The book can be used as a reference - lately I've been checking it to make sure I'm serving Fume Blanc (same as Sauvignon Blanc, as I've found out) at the appropriate temperature - but it's more likely that you'll read this as a novel. A very, very entertaining one.

Among the valuable things I've picked up from the book - besides the already-cited examples of what prominent and celebrity wine lovers like to have on their tables - include:

- How to pronounce everything related to wine you ever worried about trying to say. I'm talking about Riedel, Taittinger, Chateau Cos d'Estournel and Moet, which is pronounced "Mo-EHT, not Moe-AY."

- The many affordable options in the world of wine - encouraging those who are either shy, unadventurous, poor or all of the above to try new, good-value wines.

- What wines to pair with food, and more importantly why - from the science to the history to what is most accepted in popular culture (things like champagne and cake at weddings) even though they technically might not taste that great together.

- Decoding the many different designations: reserva, gran reserva, brut, extra-dry, sec, demi-sec, classico, classico riserva... to a point where you're more than comfortable with them.

- Wine etiquette and a generous helping of insider information on getting the most bang-for-your-buck at a restaurant without looking like a cheapskate.

If you're a wine lover and think you know everything about wine, you'll prove yourself wrong with this book. If you're a wine consumer, you will at least double the value of wine you drink - just based on how much more you'll appreciate what's in your glass. If not that, then on the tips Oldman gives you to save dough. It will likely be both. Even if you don't know anything about wine, this book will grab you in.

I've watched my girlfriend - who didn't care much for my wine obsession before - turn into an crazed fan: we were at Costco (tips on this, too!) and she replaced the bottle of BV cabernet I chose for dinner with a Pinot Noir because "Pinot Noir goes better with smoked sausage."

I'm obviously a very big fan. This book has been worth every penny.

The Wine Book to Buy

I finally found the wine book I was looking for! I previously read a couple to wine books to educate myself but they were either too complicated or packed with information I really did not need. Oldman's book is so well written, easy to read and understand. It is full of practical knowledge and organized into 108 short chapters. Each of the 350 pages is packed with useful information, and the material is arranged in an eye-catching manner. It is an entertaining read. It offers reference books and web sites for those who wish to learn more about a suject. It discusses basic grapes, regions, different types of wine, cost, pronunciations, how to pair wine with specific foods or occasions etc. This book clarified so many misconceptions and answered some of my questions in a clear way. For example: "Just say no to cork inhalation" is a memorable line that gets the message across. Another example is when Oldman describes the smell of blackcurrant and Cabernets. This book is perfect for novices who will not be ovewhelmed with useless facts. Even for someone like me who is somewhat knowledgeable about wines, this was the perfect book. I wish I read this years ago!

Another day in the life of our favorite four good guys!

This is another GREAT story in the Noah Wolfe saga! The fab four are back at it again and up against their most formidable opponent. He's a ruthless assassin that EVERYONE is after, though few have ever seen his face and lived to tell about it, because this guy leaves NO loose ends! NONE! However, when the assassin is captured by MI6, E & E sets up Noah in his place to take down the head of the organization who hired the assassin. Simple -- right? As our guys get in place and start working their plan, the real assassin escapes and now there are two of them -- the real one and Noah, whose has been made to look just like him -- dyed hair, minor facial reconstruction, and color changing contacts. All the good stuff here -- new gadgets from Neil, fast cars and fancy driving form Sarah, Moose doing his muscle thing, and Noah methodically working the plan -- killing the bad guys and never feeling a thing! All the other good guys are here too -- Allison, Dr. Parker, Jefferson -- almost recovered from his ordeal in the last book, and our favorite Brit, Catherine. Some of the other things I love about this group is all the talk about food! In the midst of the planning a lethal attack, they're eating chicken, scarfing down steak, making sandwiches, etc. Not sure if this next point is setting up a potential lover's quarrel or split, but Sarah was exceptionally whiney and clingy in this book, Allison told her just before this mission that Molly was coming to work for E & E, but we don't see her in this story. I guess she'll show up in the next book. Sarah's behavior could be laying the ground work for some problems in her and Noah's relationship! Hope not, but it could be a good plot twist for the future. Plus, there's some foreshadowing?? in the book -- when Noah said he wished he knew what love felt like and Sarah told him she thought it was just all locked away in his brain and she worried about when it broke loose, and also some foreshadowing of character death -- no spoilers here, but keep your eyes open and keep your head down! Couple of glaring errors editing should have caught -- used Adrian's name when it should have been Allison, and a few other true typos that shouldn't have made it all the way to final cut before publishing. One storyline error I think -- Sam saying how blessed he was to be married to Belinda, and what a good wife she was, then he asks Catherine out later in the story. Did the author forget Sam was married?? Also, some loose ends not tied up. . . like Mr. Broussard! Hopefully, we'll find out these things in the next book! Even with my few complaints, still a great read -- fast paced and we get to hang out with these guys!

Order has been restored at Neverland and Team Camelot is back in action. Their job? Take out a man who uses his status as a legitimate arms dealer to manipulate governments and entire nations.The only way to infiltrate the man's organisation is for Noah to apply for the only position open: an assassin. He impersonates someone described as a recently-deceased assassin.

It doesn't take long for Team Camelot to discover that everything is not as it seems and the truth will be shocking! Unfortunately, Team Camelot loses a team member in this book.

There were more errors in this book than in past books. There are words that don't belong at all (example: asked for past) and sentences that don't make sense (example: "Either way, it he’s really here, he doesn’t leave alive.”). Noah & Neil's characters are both named during one scene (all in the same paragraph), you can't tell right away who's flying a plane and who's jumping out of it with Moose.

From the beginning of the book, a character's name is spelled as Adrian and IN THE VERY NEXT PARAGRAPH, it's spelled Adrienne. This happens more than once. This isn't only a continuity mistake, it's laziness on the part of the author.
In another instance, for a few pages, a meeting is discussed. It is a meeting to be set up for Noah (as Adrian) to meet a council that wants him to assassinate a member of the royal family. The meeting is referred to as happening both "tonight" ("You and I would meet again here tonight at ten, and will be taken by limousine to the meeting place sometime after that." AND "Shall we conclude our meeting for now, then, and meet again tonight as scheduled?") and "tomorrow some time" ("We are meeting with Adrian tomorrow in London." AND "It’ll happen sometime tomorrow, but I don’t have a specific time or place.”). If you're still interested, it was "tonight".

If Mr. Archer has a proofreader, he should think about getting rid of same. If he does not have one, maybe he should consider getting one. These are pretty obvious mistakes and errors... With some of the errors, it seems like notes might have been dictated and transcribed incorrectly -- something else that should have been caught.

I'm no writer, but I'd like to think I'd at least read over the manuscript BEFORE it was published under MY name one last time before publishing (even if I did have a transcriber, proofreader, friend or anyone checking my book for errors and continuity).

It's becoming more difficult to read these books because of the numerous errors... it's distracting and I just cannot easily "fix" the errors in my own mind as I read anymore... This book only gets 3-stars because of the sheer number of mistakes. As I've stated in other reviews, a good proofreader would easily raise all my reviews for this series to 5-star ratings.

I have not decided if I want to purchase other books by Mr. Archer because of the errors -- there were errors in this series (Noah Wolf series) and there were also errors in his other series (Sam Prichard series).

Needless to say, I don't think the characters Mitch Rapp (by author Vince Flynn) or Alex Cross (by author James Patterson) have anything to worry about just yet (in spite of the author's blurb comparing his character, Noah Wolf, with those characters), but that is just my opinion...

Love the Story. Editing is Terrible,

Good story, as usual. Engaging characters. But the editing for everything from tense and person to continuity is atrocious. It is as if they did not bother to give it a final read. This is typical of David Archer's Noah Wolf series. It feels almost like an insult, as if the author and publisher were in such a hurry to take my money, they couldn't bother with some professional quality control.
It only bothers me because I like the characters and the story. I feel like I am reading a rough draft. There are times when an event is happening tonight, but characters continually speak of tomorrow instead. It is inconsistent. And little things, like an airplane throttle being pulled out to give power, rather than pushed in.

A Great Witnessing Tool With a Different Approach

Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort have teamed up to produce what I think is a great witnessing tool. May authors use the approach that accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of your life will make you feel happy and fulfilled in this life. Instead, Cameron and Comfort use the Old Testament Law (10 Commandments) to show how EVERYONE at some point and time in their life has broken at least one of the commandments and is danger of God's judgement. Additionally, the emphasis is also on the next life since we will spend far more time in heaven or hell than here on earth.

We had this course taught at our church and the basic class format is as follows: go over what we learned from the previous week's assignment, watch the DVD that goes with the book, discuss the DVD, and go over next week's assignment.

The book's chapters are as follows:

1. Cultivating Compassion for the Lost.

2. Discovering Hell's Best Kept Secret.

3. Learning to Overcome Fear.

4. Practicing What You Preach.

5. Crafting the Message.

6. Answering the Top Ten Questions.

7. Exposing the Myth of the Modern Message.

An Interesting and Fun Historical fiction account

This book describes the intriguing possibility of a lost treasure being hidden on Oak Island, Nova Scotia and the effort of a foreigner trying to find the treasure. This effort requires the help of local Acadian settlers of Nova Scotia. The adventure and romance that follows and the war of the British on the people in these parts in the wake of that adventure creates a wonderful panorama of what life was probably like for these people. A Fun Read!!!

In the early days of computing, hardware and software systems were designed separately. Today, as multicore systems predominate, this separation is becoming impractical. Computer Systems examines the key elements of all computer systems using an integrated approach that treats hardware and software as part of the same, larger system. Students gain important insights into the interplay between hardware and software and leave the course with a better understanding of a modern computer system

About the Author

Dr. Umakishore Ramachandran received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1986 under the direction of Marvin Solomon. Since then he has been with Georgia Tech (home of the yellow jackets), where he is currently a Professor in the Core Computing Division in the College of Computing. His research interests are in the area of architectural design, programming, and analysis of parallel and distributed systems. At Georgia Tech, he has been involved in the design and evaluation of several large experimental systems including Clouds, Beehive, and Stampede (joint with Compaq Cambridge Research Lab), and studying their scalability from an applications perspective. Currently, in the ubiquitous presence project, he is investigating software and hardware mechanisms for ubiquitous distributed computing for an environment comprised of distributed sensors, embedded data concentrators, and backend clusters. He received a Presidential Young Investigator (PYI) Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 1990, the Georgia Tech Doctoral Thesis Advisor award in 1993, the College of Computing Outstanding Senior Research Faculty award in 1996, the College of Computing Dean's Award in 2003, and the College of Computing William "Gus'' Baird Teaching Award in 2004.

William D. "Bill" Leahy, Jr. is currently working as a lecturer at Georgia Tech teaching introductory Computer Science. Bill earned his MS in Computer Science, from Georgia Institute of Technology, his MS in Ceramic Engineering, from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and a BS in Ceramic Engineering, from Virginia Tech. Simplest yet In-Depth System book youll ever read

This is a phenomenal book.
It helps you understand everything through real-world examples, which is an enormous help when dealing with such a complicated topic. Incredibly interesting and well-written, this book comes highly recommended by me and all my peers.

With today's growing concerns in the field of technology that the field is developing so rapidly that there never is a single person who knows everything about a certain software, or machine... this book becomes highly valuable.

Whether you are taking a course on computer systems or want to figure out just what exactly that magical black box next to your monitor is doing, this book will help you understand it quickly, simply, and efficiently.

Easily one of the best textbooks out there.

Perfect book for the undecided sophomore

The book gives you enough introductory information for you to decide which path to take: are you are a digital hardware enthusiast who has always wondered how an operating system interfaces and commands all the things you can actually see and feel on your board, or will you be an OS hacker who wants to slice and dice, break and/or remake you Linux box, or are you going to be an internetwork specialist who likes to take control of information flow on the intra/Internet. If you use this book effectively (on your own, or part of a course at your college), you'll be building and understanding your own computer system, and also have a good deal of knowledge about computer and other device networks, by the end of it. In short, an excellent material full of fundamental information to have as a computer engineer/scientist.

Decent but definitely skimps on detail in some areas

The book is pretty good for someone who wants a broad overview of computer architecture and OS topics. It is readable and conveys a basic amount of information about each subject. But if you are the type of reader who stops to think about what really must be going on in detail, you'll recognize pretty frequently that the authors do a lot of hand-waving. I understand that they must do this in order to cover all of the topics, but I wish they would be more explicit about when they are doing it.
