I'm a self confessed Tyack and Frayne junkie!
By Sinfully
Oh my! You couldn’t imagine my glee when I found out that Harper had released another Tyack and Frayne mystery just when you thought that their run had come to an end. It was a great Christmas present for sure. So without much ado a got a copy and got stuck in straight away. Yes, I’m a self-confessed Tyack and Frayne junkie.

Even though this is book six there seems to be no running out of steam for these guys. This story revolves around the Winter Solstice and if you’re going to have lots of Celtic tradition, mystical goings-on then Cornwall is the place to set it for sure. the Winter Solstice represents a turning point, the shortest day or longest night of the year and from here on in the days start to get longer. As Harper portrays in this tale it’s like the turning of a wheel and with its turning then everything has come full circle. this is definitely the case for my two favourite boys.

They are now settled and have their daughter Tamsyn. However, Tamsyn seems to be developing mystical talents of her own. Obviously this runs deep in her bloodline but it does put Gideon and Lee at a bit of a quandary as to what to do. But more is happening alongside all this and Tamsyn’s role in all this soons becomes clear.

This is a story that concerns endings and new beginnings. Gideon is confronted with all the characters of the previous books, Old Penglas, Kitto, The Beast of Bodmin Moor and Ragwen while on duty at the Solstice festival in Penzance. It was like a coming together of all the previous books and characters which felt complete. Once again he has to protect the town from outsiders who come to start a riot but in so doing discovers why Tamsyn is the way she is.

I just loved this whole story, intricate plot, full of mystery and atmosphere and beautifully written Harper Fox style. this story seems to bring everything in their lives full circle just as the Winter Solstice would I guess. I loved how everything plays out in this book. I could feel the love that Lee and Gideon have for each other now a complete family and not to goive anything away even Zeke, Gideon’s older brother, has a surprise up his sleeve for everyone.

So I get the feeling with this book that everything has now been rounded up and brings everything together beautifully. If this should now really be the last book in the Tyack and Frayne series then I feel it is most definitely a fitting and wonderful end to what has been a fantastic and endearing time with these characters. They are among my all time favourites and will remain with me for a long time. If it’s not the last book then I’ll be waiting around the corner to snatch up the next one for sure.

I understand totally that I am biased. I am surely one of Harper Fox’s number one fans. But, with that grain of salt in mind, here are my thoughts on her latest installment of the continuing saga of Locryn Tayack and Gideon Frayne, clairvoyant and copper in the Cornish village of Dark.

The first thing I need to note is that Fox is without question (bias aside) a superb writer by any definition of the word. Reading her books is simply a joy. She is elegant and literate and – trickiest of all to pull off—effortless. Secondly, she manages to pack so much content into the novella that one only notices the short format because it ends too soon. I never feel cheated by the relatively diminutive scale of the books in this series. While each episode stands alone, one admits that by this time it is best if you’ve read some of the others so that you know who Lee Tyack and Gid Frayne are; as well as Zeke, Gid’s dour elder brother, and the various denizens of Dark whose lives Gideon and Lee have touched – if not saved – over the previous volumes.

Here we find the Solstice approaching, and with it Tamsyn Tyack-Frayne’s first birthday. If the trauma around Tamsie’s adoption has settled down, the lingering pain and fear have not entirely dissipated. But normality, insofar as it is possible in a two-dad household where both fathers seem to have some sort of paranormal connection to each other and the spirit world in general, has returned.

Then Tamsyn surprises her dads with a little unanticipated skill set and knocks their world off its axis once again.

Gideon is assigned, by being volunteered in spite of his well-earned holiday, to help monitor the Montol celebration on the Solstice over in Penzance (a place I only know through Gilbert & Sullivan). This is the nominal centerpiece of the action in the story, but it is only the hub, around which various cataclysmic events swirl; events related to Ezekiel’s ongoing relationship with Eleanor, grandma Frayne, Tamsyn’s surprises, and Gideon’s own embrace of his inner being.

As always, Lee and Gideon are portrayed with such vibrant clarity that it is like visiting old friends. There is no couple anywhere in m/m literature whom I love as much as I love these men. Fox shows us their individual personalities and their relationship with such vivid intimacy (and, I’ll note, there is no onscreen sex in this one at all) that they simply become real to me.

The pace of the novella is quick and steady. The imagery is gorgeous, the characters are memorable and quirky, and the emotional impact is startling. In Harper Fox’s world, where being gay in the straight world is a given and not a problem, these men are just allowed to be themselves, which is quite complicated enough, thank you.

I’ll end with a lovely citation, which will only make sense when you read this book:

“Then, in an alcove, protected on both sides by her wondering parents, she lived the world into the warm space between them, tipped it correctly on its axis, and set it to spin.”

Happy New Year to you all.

Third Solstice by Harper Fox
By Lena Grey
“Accept the things to which fate binds you, and love the people with whom fate brings you together, but do so with all your heart.” ― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Whether we mean to or not, we all have certain expectations for our children. Gideon and Lee, from 'Third Solstice' by Harper Fox, know all too well the issues that come up from being “different”, so they try to influence Tamsyn's behavior so she is safe, accepted, and within what society deems normal. At the same time they expect to accomplish this without stifling their child's creativity and individuality. When Tamsyn starts dangling Christmas ornaments in midair and tossing balls across the room without touching them, it's obvious that Tamsyn is anything but “ordinary”.

Gideon is amazed with his little girl's abilities, but, at the same time, fears for her safety as well. She's too young to know how to control such abilities and acting on them could prove to be dangerous. He and Lee talk about how to handle the situation. Lee suggests that Gideon use his abilities and connect mentally with Tamsyn with the same approach he uses for anything else he wants her not to do, i.e., not pulling the dog’s tail. Gideon decides to try and ends up upsetting both of them and abandons the effort. They are going to have to think of another way. While doing so, they get a very unusual visitor, Granny Rag wen, whom everyone calls the witch of Dark. She said she “smelled” magic and came to investigate. Being able to detect that it's the baby who is wielding the power, Granny is delighted. When they show concern, Granny reminds them of their “magical” backgrounds, basically saying how could she be otherwise. As soon as politely possible, they urge Granny out the door, not quite knowing what to think, but accepting that their daughter's telekinetic tricks are no longer a secret.

Gideon is supposed to be on vacation, especially with Tamsyn’s first birthday being on Yule; but most of the police force are sick with the flu leaving them short-handed. Gideon is recruited to help with a big Pagan celebration that tends to get quite rowdy. Lee decides he and Tamsyn need to attend as well. Gideon balks, but when Lee insists that they be there, he gives in. They go off to the festivities and Gideon goes about handling the trouble which, this year, involves delinquents torching the town and another encounter with Granny Ragwen. When the problems are under control, Gideon is frantic to find his way back to Lee and their baby. He's just in time to witness what most people think is the 'fire dance', a part of the Monton celebration, but what Gideon and Lee realize is a foreshadowing of even bigger and better events in the future and there's nothing they can or even want to prevent.

It is great to visit with Gideon, Lee, Tamsyn, and the rest of their eclectic, mysterious family and to catch up on their accomplishments. Harper's vivid descriptions along with her picturesque examples, add color, mystery, and drama to the already exciting tale. It's good to see Gideon accepting and acting upon the gifts he has tried to deny for so many years and to see Lee's pride in his husband's accomplishments. There are many more revelations, surprises, and changes coming up, but even hinting at them will be saying too much. Fans of the series will love this story and, to those of you who have not had the pleasure of reading it, I would encourage you to start at the beginning and read all the other books in the series. You are missing a real treat if you don’t. Thank you, Harper, for another mysterious, frightful, interesting, and lovable Gideon and Lee story. Originally reviewed at Rainbow Book Reviews.
