Max combines these professional activities with a passion for farming, homesteading, and other traditional crafts. Great Wood-fired How-to!

I recently watched an episode of Man, Food, Fire on the Cooking Channel titled "Outrageous Ovens". The first half featured a barrel oven in Oregon. I was fascinated by the oven which appeared to be highly fuel-efficient and seemingly inexpensive to build. I immediately began searching for information on barrel ovens and found this book.

It is a great little book; clearly written, nicely organized, and well illustrated with a wealth of information and resources. I like the fact that it takes in to account the varying selection of materials and approaches, depending on budget, climate and locale. The book presents the techniques in a manner that is not at all intimidating to someone like me who has little knowledge of masonry techniques. The book makes the prospect of building a barrel oven both technically and financially doable.

The other very appealing aspect of this book is the modesty of the authors. This book doesn't purport to be the definitive tome on barrel ovens. It presents barrel oven construction as a fairly recent and evolving subject and actively solicits participation and feedback by any and all.

I highly recommend this to anyone who has ever considered building any kind of wood-fired oven. Even if you are considering something grander such as a domed or vaulted wood-fired oven, this would be a great starter and/or companion project.

I will try to update my review when I finish building my own barrel oven!

Careful when buying this book!

Careful when buying this book. It does a pretty nice job explaining the masonry part of the job but tells little about the metal parts (and there are lots of special metal parts). Be aware that the authors expect you to buy the metal kit from their store. Towards the end of the book there is mention of a future second book covering the metal pieces but over a year down the road I've not seen it and I follow their website looking for more information. There are also quite a few recipes in this book which was disappointing filler.

food and fire - a book for people interested in delicious self-sufficiency

I'm very excited about this book. I read it in one night- from the intros to the recipes in the back.
I'm a natural builder, who's enjoying the way that cob earthen ovens are becoming so much more well known. However, there are two main drawbacks to the more common earthen oven system (where the cook builds a fire in the oven cavity and then removes the coals)...It takes hours for the heat of the oven to accumulate, and it's difficult to cook larger items, because sometimes the door size can be limiting (and if someone makes a bigger oven to accommodate a bigger dish of food, than it will take even longer to heat up.)
Eva and Max have built and studied many such ovens. And so I think it's even more interesting that they're so taken with the barrel oven system. It seems like a great alternative. They heat up in 2o minutes, and can cook a wide range of foods, and Eva and Max have shown through their own work that barrel ovens can be beautiful.
I appreciate the simplicity of the book, the careful diagrams, the open discourse with the reader asking for feedback and engagement to improve this system, the examples of barrel ovens that they and others have built, and the obvious love which they bring to craft, food, and fire.
For the people that consider the metal work of the project daunting, they offer resources, and kits.
I also like how their book brings me closer to the earthen building tradition in Argentina (which is where their journey with the oven started). People have already been exploring the resourcefulness of barrel ovens there for some time.
I'm looking forward to building my own, hopefully this summer.
