When you’re in love with the wrong person for the right reasons, anything could happen.
Tretch lives in a very small town where everybody's in everybody else's business. Which makes it hard for him to be in love with his straight best friend. For his part, Matt is completely oblivious to the way Tretch feels – and Tretch can’t tell whether that makes it better or worse.

The problem with living a lie is that the lie can slowly become your life. For Tretch, the problem isn’t just with Matt. His family has no idea who he really is and what he’s really thinking. The girl at the local bookstore has no clue how off-base her crush on him is. And the guy at school who’s a thorn in Tretch’s side doesn’t realize how close to the truth he’s hitting.

Tretch has spent a lot of time dancing alone in his room, but now he’s got to step outside his comfort zone and into the wider world. Because like love, a true self can rarely be contained.
Anything Could Happen is a poignant, hard-hitting exploration of love and friendship, a provocative debut that shows that sometimes we have to let things fall apart before we can make them whole again.

Gr 8 Up—This debut novel introduces readers to gay teen Richard "Tretch" Farm, his straight best friend (and major crush), Matt, and their caring circle of family and friends in contemporary small-town U.S.A. Readers experience Tretch's turbulent emotions as well as the warmth of his close-knit extended family in this first-person narrative. Over the course of one eventful winter break, he goes from bullied, closeted, and secretive about his love of dance to out, proud, reconciled with his former tormentor, and rocking out on the dance floor. The ending's rushed resolution to several plot threads is hard to believe, yet it is preceded by many slow-moving scenes that detail Tretch's moment-by-moment longing for the unattainable—and frankly somewhat boring—Matt. VERDICT While not a necessary purchase, this is a friendly read for teens who enjoyed the sweetness in David Levithan's Boy Meets Boy (Knopf, 2005) or the small-town experience in Emily M. Danforth's The Miseducation of Cameron Post (HarperCollins, 2013).—Sarah Stone, San Francisco Public Library
Review
Praise for Will Walton's Anything Could Happen:
"Will Walton makes magic in his funny-sad-lovely heartache of a debut novel, Anything Could Happen. Main character Tretch Farm says it best: There’s sickness, and there’s sadness. But the thing is, there’s love, too.’ So much love. This book is good. It really is. It really, really is." -- Jennifer Niven, New York Times bestselling author of All the Bright Places
"PUSH is proud to introduce a phenomenal debut about the unpredictable, unbearable, and ultimately amazing trajectory of falling in love and falling into the right place." -- David Levithan
"This coming-of-age contemporary reveals an emotionally poignant story that perfectly captures the trials and tribulations of adolescence. It's the perfect follow-up read to any John Green novel." -- Buzzfeed

Sweet
By Talvi
Anything Can Happen is a coming out story that eschews a traditional happily ever after ending in favor of slice of life sweetness. It may not go anywhere, and not much does happen, but it's a nice story.
Main character Tretch is a nice guy navigating through life with a supportive family and questions about what he wants for his future. He's had a crush on his best friend, Matt, since forever - ironic since Matt's parents are a gay couple and Matt feels the need to continually announce he's straight. Over the Christmas holiday period, Tretch will deal with Matt's budding relationship with a waitress, a school friend who has a crush on him, and some bullying from the son of his father's coworker. Add in cancer since that is trendy right now in YA/NA genre.
I had thought that the title meant the book had some wonderful twists and turns in it. However, the reference is a song by Ellie Goulding and the story continues without any plot machinations. So the heart of the book is Tretch - a sweet, endearing, and engaging person with few faults and a lot of gentleness.
For me, I just didn't find anything engaging about the story. Tretch and his family/friends felt a bit too unreal and lacking in necessary faults to flesh them out. Subtle character nuances were lacking and Tretch pretty much is a passive guy just going along with the flow. It made the story fairly inert for me; I've never been interested in a simple and gentle slice of life story and certainly I want to see real people, not ideals of a real person.
I think many will enjoy Tretch's story of unrequited love since Tretch is such a likeable guy. For me, I wanted more depth and for the story to live up to the title "anything can happen." I'd have preferred that 'anything' to be in the story rather than a suggestion that the future is open. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

High on character
By Liviania
Will Walton's debut novel ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN is sweet, if rather uneventful. Tretch is closeted and deeply in love with his straight best friend, Matt. Lots of people joke about them being gay, since Matt has two dads, and Tretch is torn about the fact that he secretly wishes it were true.
ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN is a terrific character study. Tretch is a nice kid and it is heartening to see him grow confident in himself and open up to his family and friends (old and new). I can see ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN being cathartic for teens struggling with the same issues that plague Tretch. Do you tell someone you have a crush when you know they won't reciprocate? Will your religious parents accept you?
There's potential for conflict in ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. Beyond the issue of coming out (or not), Tretch has another secret: he loves to dance and choreographs dances to his favorite songs. There's also Matt's new girlfriend, who Tretch feels jealous of. Or there's the girl whose abrasiveness is hiding her crush on Tretch. But everything comes to a head in a soft, gentle manner. This is just a very soothing sort of book, the kind that tells you things will work out alright even when they seem dire at the time.
ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN is a pleasant read, with its optimistic realism. It is not for those who are looking for an eventful, plotty book, but it is not without its charms. Sometimes short and sweet gets the job done.

Beyond disappointed.
By Theon Novel Olivander
I’ll be honest: when I first heard about this book last year, about the title, I was a little ticked off. I hate it when people use titles that reference to popular music (e.g. Let the Sky Fall by Shannon Messenger taken from Adele’s “Skyfall”). But at the same time, I love the cover and at the time I was all about the song, so I figured I might give it a shot. But someone told me (and told me and told me) that it wasn’t worth it. That they were disappointed with this book when they finished it, and I didn’t listen to them because I was hoping that it was actually going to be good.
I was so disappointed to find so many things about this book that I didn’t like. By the end of the novel, I literally just skimmed over the words (and last few pages) so I could be done—and usually, I read a book word for word if it’s really good.
I guess the first thing I didn’t like about this book was how cheesy it was. Starting with the title and the multiple times Will Walton references the song and Ellie Goulding, I was basically over it halfway through. I mean, there are so many situations within the book that are so cheesy (like a big high school dance at the end) and eye-roll-worthy, when they accumulated to that point where I just wanted to give up on this book, there wasn’t anything that redeemed it at any point after. I just wanted to set it down and not pick it up again.
The second thing would be diction. I kept expecting the characters to say “Gee willikers.” I hated the way he wrote dialogue. These people talk like they’re not from this century and it got annoying. I’m pretty sure the setting of this novel was Small Town, USA—but there’s a line where bumkin is just too much. Moreover, it wasn't a captive voice. There are some books written in the first person and you feel like you're part of the book because it's so good and this wasn't that AT ALL.
Third and POSSIBLY MOST IMPORTANT is the fact that it felt like the plot kept changing and never resolving any earlier issues that arose. The main plot to this story is him falling in love with his straight best friend, but at one point, the best friend isn’t even in the book anymore (until he returns) and it’s like: plot keeps changing, and we’re never coming back to any plot points that were started.
People keep saying this book is “beautifully written”. I hate it when people use that to refer to everything. Beautifully written makes me picture…I don’t know, the Perks of Being a Wallflower? That was beautifully written. This I feel was honestly written by a grown man trying to emulate a high schooler, and it just did not go over well. His voice was annoying, it was irritating, (like I said before) I wanted to quit.
Read something else. I promise you’re not missing out.
